One of the goals that has guided the Turkey Creek Trail System from the beginning has been creating progression.
Not just more trails, but better opportunities for people to grow their skills, explore new terrain, and find experiences that match where they are in their riding journey.
The planned Progressive Slickrock Zone represents one of the clearest examples of that vision.
Alignment
Located along the soon-to-open Upside Dawn corridor, this area is designed around three descending trail alignments currently referred to by their planning names: Psychedelic Slickrock, Turkey Wagon, and Turkey Tumble. These names are placeholders used during planning and are not expected to be the final trail names. As the project moves through the remaining process, more thematic names consistent with the rest of the Turkey Creek system will replace them.
Together, these three alignments create a progression of experiences that allow users to develop confidence and technical ability while enjoying some of the most unique terrain in the Turkey Creek system.
Like all trails in the system, these alignments remain open to multiple users, including hikers. At the same time, they are intentionally designed as bike-optimized experiences. That means the alignments, line choices, transitions, and flow are specifically crafted to create a unique riding experience while remaining compatible with shared use.
The concept is simple: travel along Upside Dawn, enjoy the views and slickrock terrain, then choose the descent that matches your ability, confidence, and desired experience.
The first half of Upside Dawn is mostly built and currently signed as under construction. While it is not yet fully open, it has already generated excitement among local trail users because of the terrain it traverses and the experience it promises.
Once complete, Upside Dawn will become the spine of this zone, setting up a series of descending options that branch from it.
Progression
The first step in the progression is the trail currently referred to as Psychedelic Slickrock. Positioned just above Easy Breezy in overall difficulty, it is intended to bridge an important gap in the system and help riders take the next step into more technical slickrock terrain.
The next level in the progression is the alignment currently referred to as Turkey Wagon. This trail expands upon the concepts introduced on the first alignment and adds a longer, more immersive experience with greater terrain variation and opportunities for creative line selection.
At the top of the progression is the alignment currently referred to as Turkey Tumble. While not intended to replicate the difficulty or consequence of Hardline, this trail begins to introduce some of the same feelings that make advanced slickrock riding so rewarding.
All three alignments follow slickrock drainages that descend approximately 250 feet through expansive bedrock features. In many places, the landscape already provides the experience. The challenge becomes connecting those opportunities together in a way that feels intuitive and natural.
Some sections require very little intervention. Others require high-quality rock work and careful construction to connect rock-to-rock and rock-to-soil transitions.
Thoughtful Design
The goal is not to impose a trail onto the landscape, but to reveal the best line that already exists within it.
The design philosophy behind the Progressive Slickrock Zone draws inspiration from successful recent projects such as Hardline. Hardline is not part of Turkey Creek, but it has helped show what terrain-driven slickrock trail design can achieve in Sedona.
The Progressive Slickrock Zone also helps set expectations for how the broader Turkey Creek system works. Beginner-friendly and lower-intensity trails remain more accessible in lower portions of the system. As users travel deeper into the network, the trail experiences become progressively more technical and committing.
For hikers, these trails will still offer access to beautiful terrain and unique views. For riders, they provide a specifically bike-optimized descent experience designed around slickrock movement, line choice, and progression.
The Progressive Slickrock Zone represents another important step in the evolution of the Turkey Creek Trail System. It demonstrates how thoughtful trail design can create opportunities for skill development, sustainability, and unforgettable experiences within the same landscape.
